Kukës International Airport, also named as Kukës Airport, is an airport about 3.5 km south of Kukës, in Albania. In 2016, the Albanian government granted the permission to receive international passengers. The majority of travellers using Kukes Airport are frequent travellers, people leaving or coming back to their homes, and travellers who can’t afford expensive travel costs. As such, the circulation routes need to be efficient and time sparing

CONCEPT

The passenger approach to the terminal, is through the north (departures) and south ( arrivals) elevation. In order to provide maximum transparency and communication with the natural, wild and beautiful landscape of Kukës, as well as minimal impact of the building, to avoid the feeling of being under isolation, the two main facades are made of extra-clear glass walls, offering optimal view from the landside and airside hall.

MATERIALS AND STRUCTURE

There are three main components which define the Kukës Airport Terminal exterior: glass walls, providing an inseparable dialogue between the interior and the exterior of the building, the steel structure and the inclined industrial roof, an identifying element for airport terminal buildings, giving the volumetric an aerodynamic shape.

The design team strived for serenity, unity, and the building allows future extensions by utilizing structural modularity and a clear scheme.
